This event will explore the state of knowledge on alternatives to custody across the United Kingdom and in Europe. It is being co-hosted by the University of Birmingham and the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies

About the event

Dr Siddhartha Bandyopadhyay and colleagues from the University of Birmingham will discuss their research on the impact of different forms of non-custodial sentences on police recorded crime rates. Dr Tim Hope, a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies, will offer a critique of the econometric approach of Dr Bandyopadhyay and colleagues.

Also speaking at the event:

  • Catherine Heard of the Institute for Criminal Policy Research will offer an overview of community sentences across the UK and the rest of Europe.
  • Savas Hadjipavlou of the Probation Institute will offer a policy perspective on what works in alternatives to custody.
  • A policy panel will conclude the event, with contributions from, among others: Rob Allen, Researcher and consultant on criminal justice; Richard Garside, Centre for Crime and Justice Studies; Dr Siddhartha Bandyopadhyay and Nick Cowen, King’s College London.
