The themed section featuring a series of articles by contributors who consider the background of, and offer a narrative about, the riots that took place in August 2011.

Guest editor Tim Hope introduces a number of contributors, including David Waddington who points out that public disorders in England have been ignited before by a flashpoint incident, and P A J Waddington comments on how the police will always face difficult decisions concerning strategy and control when trying to maintain social order.

Topical articles include John Shute examining the Coalition strategy towards gang and youth violence and finds it wanting. Paul Taylor discusses disability hate crime, and Helen Baker cautions against using popular assumptions to explain parent abuse. In the In Focus section, Helen Mills examines the role of a housing support charity in the resettlement of ex-prisoners with a conviction for sexual offences.
